In 2022, Rugby League Cares will head to the US for an incredible adventure with the UK Red Empire State 500. This 500-mile bike ride starts in Niagara Falls, travelling through to Central Park, New York, six days later.
Riders who participate in this once-in-a-lifetime adventure will travel along the Erie Canal eastwards after starting at Niagara Falls. From there, they continue to Albany, which is the state capital of New York, then further south past the Hudson River on parts of the Appalachian Trail.
During the journey, riders will see the native American Iroquois, Sioux and Algonquin tribes’ ancestral homelands and parts of small-town America they might never otherwise see. Passing through Amish communities will give them an insight into areas of the country that many people don’t even know exist.
The end of the route is one of the highlights of the trip, riding through the Bronx, Harlem, and then into Broadway and Manhattan for the finishing line in Central Park. Cyclists will be pleased to learn that most of the route is on cycleways and trails which are free from traffic. They’ll receive the assistance of RL Cares staff members, who are there to support them during every moment of the ride.
The ride is sponsored by UK Red Security and Fire Systems, with Managing Director, Kevin Walton, representing the company on the trip. The Leeds-based company are excited to be part of this adventure once again and support the charity’s annual fundraising efforts.
The UK Red Empire State 500 is capped at 20 riders, and cyclists will be riding alongside former Rugby League internationals who are proud to support the members of their community. There are limited places on offer to the general public, who are looking to push themselves while creating lifelong memories.
After the postponement of the ride during the recent pandemic, everyone who is signed up already is excited to head overseas in June 2022. The Head of RL Cares stated, “It’s going to be an amazing experience for everyone involved, a real ‘bucket list’ adventure that will see the riders see America in a unique and exciting way.” He went on to thank the team at UK Red for their generosity and support and highlighted their commitment to the charity over the past years.
In response, Kevin Walton, UK Red Managing Director, shared, “As a company, we feel privileged to have the opportunity to extend our partnership with Rugby League Cares into 2022; as a cyclist, I must admit to being both thrilled and daunted by the challenge and ambition of the UK Red Empire State 500!” Kevin and his team are proud to support the Rugby League communities and know the funds raised during the event will be put to excellent use and make a huge difference to the quality of life of the people they support.
The adventure begins on Friday, June 3, where the riders will head over to the US to begin their journey. They’ll start off by sightseeing at Niagara Falls on the Saturday morning before the real challenge begins on the Sunday. Each day, they expect to travel roughly 85 miles, staying in hotels each night along the route. Their arrival into Central Park is scheduled for the afternoon of Friday, June 10, and the celebrations will continue into the night.
Riders will meet in a Broadway restaurant that night to celebrate their achievements before having two days to explore over the weekend. With so much to see and do in the Big Apple, the team will be able to choose their own activities before heading home together on the Sunday night.
For anyone thinking about joining the team, riders will pay a participation fee to assist with covering the flights and accommodation on the route. There is a minimum fundraising target as well, but all meals, bike hire, cycling kit, and transfers are covered upon arrival in the US.
